International Bioeconomy Forum: Working Group Open Session on Indicators, Metrics and Standards for Bioeconomy

Climate & Company, jointly with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity, is hosting an in-person Open Session of the International Bioeconomy Forum’s Working Group for Indicators, Metrics and Standards for Bioeconomy. The session takes place at Europe House, Dublin, alongside the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2026, and builds on the GBS workshop “Beyond invisibility: The role of metrics and standards for global scaling-up of sustainable and competitive bioeconomy solutions,” held on Tuesday, 20 October.

Why metrics and standards matter

Metrics and standards are the operational foundation of any credible bioeconomy claim. Where standards for bio-based content, sustainability performance and chain-of-custody are absent, not fit-for-purpose, or simply not used, this can create trade barriers, undermine consumer trust, limit access to premium markets, and weaken the evidence base needed to mobilise investment. Building on the GBS 2024 workshop on monitoring, the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy, the COP30 Bioeconomy Challenge Working Group on Metrics and Indicators, and the work of organisations such as FAO and IICA, IBF-standards has been developing a framework to close this gap by linking national-level measurement with value-chain and firm-level performance.

What the session will cover

The Open Session will develop implementation and research roadmaps for robust metrics and standards that can strengthen credible bioeconomy claims, reduce trade barriers, build consumer trust, and unlock investment by connecting national measurement with value-chain and firm-level performance.

• Building on the “Beyond invisibility” workshop, participants will discuss in break-out groups how the G20 High-Level Principles and related technical work can be translated into practical tools to scale implementation.
• The session brings together standards experts, value-chain actors and policymakers to identify who needs which data, and in what form, so that metrics and standards can support policy, investment decisions, and practical uptake by market actors.
• The discussion will feed into concrete recommendations for future research, innovation and implementation programmes.
