High-Level Workshop on “Disclosure on Nature & Biodiversity within the G20”

March 26, 2024

18 months after global leaders reached the so-called “Paris Agreement for Nature” at the COP15 Biodiversity Conference in Montréal, a high-level event taking place on 18 April 2024 in Berlin will explore how the G20 can effectively support and uphold the UN Biodiversity targets by focusing on sustainable finance instruments during Brazil’s current G20 Presidency.

Climate & Company is collaborating with the Post 2020 – Biodiversity Framework EU Support Project and the Embassy of Brazil in Germany to host the high-level hybrid workshop, bringing together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders from the G20 community. The workshop will facilitate discussions on leveraging cooperation at G20 level to enhance the implementation of international sustainable finance instruments, particularly sustainability disclosure standards, to preserve biodiversity. The dialogue will focus in particular on strategies leading up to the 19th G20 Summit scheduled for 18-19 November 2024 in Rio de Janeiro.

In the past years, the EU has taken major steps to create a rulebook for preserving nature and halting deforestation through sustainable finance instruments. But Europeans cannot stop deforestation alone. To live up to the UN biodiversity targets, we need to build on the economic and political power of the G20, representing 80% of international trade. Brazil’s leadership in promoting biodiversity and zero deforestation during its G20 Presidency is an opportunity to highlight the impact that international trade and corporate disclosure rules can have on nature preservation”, says Dr Sofia Helena Zanella Carra, the project’s coordinator.

Hugo Rivera Mendoza, Team Leader Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU Support adds “our project is thrilled to continue the fruitful collaboration with Climate and Company. Disclosure can contribute to create the enabling conditions for sustainable businesses to thrive and be able to demonstrate their commitment and positive impact on biodiversity, while informing consumers about the inherent advantages of their products and services”.

The 3-hour event that participants can attend in person or online will be an opportunity to discuss different perspectives of the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing disclosure on biodiversity and nature within G20 countries. It aims to empower stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to make sustainable finance work at the international level and to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of corporate reporting on nature and biodiversity at the G20 level.

Background

In an effort to live up to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) reached by global leaders at the UN Biodiversity Conference in Montreal in December 2022, Germany’s leading sustainable finance think tank Climate & Company teamed up with the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU support project, funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by Expertise France, for the project “G20: Sustainable Finance for Nature and People”. The event on 18 April is the first in a series of events to explore how the G20 can help make sustainable finance instruments for biodiversity protection, sustainable land use and deforestation work at the international level.
