Brazil’s Beef Sector and the EUDR: A Case for Collective Readines
As the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) sets new benchmarks for responsible supply chains, Brazil’s beef sector—one of the largest exporters to the EU—is stepping up to meet the challenge.
This case study spotlights how the Brazilian Beef Exporters Association (ABIEC) is helping steer a sector-wide response to EUDR compliance. From technical alignment of Brazil’s national traceability tools to EU reporting standards, to launching supplier support programs and conducting dry-run simulations, ABIEC and its members are proactively shaping a credible pathway to compliance.
Through legal analysis, bilateral dialogues with EU industry counterparts, and engagement in national policy development, ABIEC’s efforts reveal how coordinated private-sector leadership in high-risk jurisdictions can strengthen both environmental safeguards and trade relationships. The case also examines persistent challenges—like data validation and traceability of indirect suppliers—and outlines what’s still needed to fully operationalize deforestation-free commitments.
