GreenGrocer
Advancing footprinting for a rapid food transition
October 7, 2025
What?
GreenGrocer aims to improve food footprint data by strengthening knowledge infrastructure and consolidating tools such as Trase HESTIA, CoolFarm, and EXIOBASE, which collectively form the foundation of most food footprint data currently in use.
GreenGrocer is a Research and Innovation project funded under the Horizon Europe programme of the European Commission. The project was funded under the call for research on environmental impacts of food systems in Cluster 6: “Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment”.
The GreenGrocer team consists of 22 partners in 11 European countries. The project start date was September 2025 and the end date is August 2029.
Why?
Current research provides a good indication of which foods are the most sustainable.
Yet, the knowledge infrastructure for food footpritng data falls short in terms of scientific robustness and its applicability to support regulatory and business decision-making processes. Today’s vital databases often focus on food as farmed, not on the plate. Modeling of the trade and processing stages between farm and plate is often coarse.
The project invests in advancing the state of the art in food information systems, by developing more precise, accurate, and up-to-date footprints of foods on the supermarket shelf.
Robust and accurate food footprint data is needed to inform the sustainable food system transition.
How?
The project invests in fundamental improvements in key food LCA platforms and will:
- address gaps in supply chain coverage and the impacts of products
- strenghten key open-source food data platforms by enhancing data standardisation and interoperability
- engage in co-creation and knowledge exchange with science and industry
- ensure compliance with EU environmental standards and will promote collaboration and align outputs with 13 EU policy frameworks.
