Sustainable Finance Instruments for Biodiversity Protection, Sustainable Land Use and Deforestation Prevention

Since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF), the need for public policies and initiatives relating to biodiversity and the challenges and opportunities relating to nature has only increased. Significant investments are needed to meet global climate and biodiversity targets and to safeguard future generations. A powerful and strategic way to advance the biodiversity agenda is to engage with the G20, building on the economic and political power that these countries have, and the opportunity to highlight the impact that their trade agreements and limited corporate disclosure rules can have on nature and biodiversity loss.
What?
We want to enhance sustainable finance instruments for biodiversity protection, sustainable land use and deforestation within the G20
With the support of the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework – EU support project, funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by Expertise France, we aim to:
- Promote the use of Sustainable Finance Instruments, particularly Taxonomies and Non-Financial Disclosure Standards – with a focus on conserving biodiversity and halting deforestation during Brazil’s G20 Presidency.
- Collaborate with already established engagement groups and Working Groups to promote Sustainable Finance Instruments throughout Brazil’s G20 Presidency.
Why?
The G20 can play an important role in promoting sustainable finance instruments
The G20 brings together important producers and megadiverse countries besides jurisdictions which represent 80% of international trade (WWF, 2022 – When Finance talks Nature, in Cooperation with Climate & Company). With the motto “building a fair world and a sustainable planet”, the preservation of biodiversity and zero deforestation will be important themes during Brazil’s first G20 presidency. In this context, Brazil as a proactive country on sustainable finance and corporate disclosure in Latin America can play a leading role in promoting sustainable financial instruments in the G20. Presenting evidence-based arguments to key policy makers relating to Sustainable Finance Instruments in the G20 represents an exceptional opportunity to make progress in this area contributing with the implementation of the KM-GBF.
How?
Engage, provide capacity-building and empower Brazilian policymakers and the engagement groups at the G20 to promote the integration of sustainable finance instruments
The engagement, capacity-building, and empowerment of Brazilian policymakers and Engagement groups within the G20 will be conducted through practical technical workshops, establishing dialogues, publication of policy briefs and reports, as well as participation in high-level meetings and interventions. Acting as a broker between existing initiatives, this project will mobilise relevant partners and experts, aligning their messages and mobilising them in a synergistic manner across the different stages of the capacity-building process.
